The History
Milan–Milan, in 1905
Il Lombardia was the idea of journalist Tullo Morgagni — the same man who would launch Milan–San Remo two years later. His Gazzetta dello Sport organized a rematch between riders on 12 November 1905, called Milano–Milano; Giovanni Gerbi won by 40 minutes. The race took the name Giro di Lombardia in 1907.
The race with the fewest interruptions
Since its creation, it has been the classic with the fewest interruptions: only the 1943 and 1944 editions were cancelled, because of the war. The last Monument of the season, run in autumn, it is nicknamed the Classic of the Falling Leaves.
Coppi and the Madonna del Ghisallo
From the 1930s to the 1950s, Alfredo Binda, Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi turned it into a race of legend. Coppi won it five times, four in a row, always alone, attacking on the Madonna del Ghisallo. At the top, the church of the Madonna del Ghisallo, patroness of cyclists, now houses a cycling museum.
Como, Bergamo and the climbers' race
In 1961 the finish moved from Milan to Como, on the lake: the race became a succession of climbs in mountain scenery. Since 2014 the finish has alternated between Bergamo and Como. Tadej Pogačar won it five times in a row, from 2021 to 2025.
Why This Ride
Il Lombardia is the Classic of the Falling Leaves: the end of the season, autumn colours around Lake Como, and climbs that never seem to end. Here, it's a course, Bergamo to Como. Your ride, preserved in ink, one line at a time.
Make the Achievement Yours
Add a name, finish time or short dedication to turn the artwork into a personal record of the work behind the medal. Personalization is optional; leave the field blank for the original composition.
How It Is Made
The composition, hierarchy and final linework are directed by a person. A pen plotter then draws the artwork physically, line by line, with ink on paper. Small production variations can occur during physical plotting.
Plotted by a robot. Designed by a person.
