A technical plan of the BMW M5 (E60), drawn in pen, line by line, on 250 g/m² paper, 11 × 17 in (27.9 x 43.2 cm). A physical nib presses into the paper and lays down real ink, in Québec. On the back: a serial number and a date, drawn in UV ink in the same pass as the artwork.

The M5's silhouette exists as a file, everywhere — a drawing anyone can call up on a screen. What doesn't exist everywhere is a copy that can say who drew it, where, on what day, and under which number.

The E60-generation BMW M5 is the only M5 ever built around a V10 — and the first production sedan in the world to get one. The naturally aspirated 5.0-litre S85B50 spins to an 8,250 rpm redline for 507 hp (373 kW), routed through a 7-speed SMG III gearbox to a 4.7-second 0–100 km/h run. Top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h, or 305 km/h with the M Driver's Package unlocked. BMW built 20,548 between 2005 and 2010 — sedan and Touring combined — bridging the V8 E39 before it and the twin-turbo F10 after.

Each piece is physically plotted by the studio's precision robot in Québec City, using Stabilo® Fineliners and Sakura® Gelly Roll inks on 250 gsm (120 lb) stock — stroke by stroke, never printed. A physical tip presses into the paper and lays down real ink. The result is a tactile, hand-plotted finish — never printed.

Hidden signature

The CodeInk signature glowing under UV light on the back of a plotted piece

Real footage — an early production piece, shown under blacklight.

A signature only UV light reveals

On the back of every piece, in the same pass as the drawing, we plot a signature invisible under normal light — codeink.art, the piece's name and serial number, the year, and Québec. Shine a blacklight on it and it glows.

“This is the M5 that borrowed its engine architecture from Formula 1 and never apologized for it — ten cylinders, a redline past 8,000 rpm, a sound BMW never matched again. None of that survives in a line drawing. What's left is proportion: the long hood hiding that V10, the quad exhaust tips, a shape that still reads as fast standing still. Drawing it meant trusting the silhouette to carry what the engine note can't.”

— Carlos, CodeInk.art, Québec

Open production

This piece isn't a limited edition — production stays open. Small variations in ink flow and line closure can occur during physical plotting, giving each plotted piece its own production trace.

The pen wears down as it draws. Ink runs denser at the start. One line closes a hair away from the last. Nothing gets corrected and nothing gets hidden: it's the simplest proof the object was made rather than duplicated.

PERFECTLY imperfect.
