A technical plan of the España, drawn in pen, line by line, on 250 g/m² paper, 11 x 17 in (27.9 x 43.2 cm). A physical nib presses into the paper and lays down real ink, stroke after stroke.
The España exists as a photo and a spec sheet, everywhere — a drawing anyone can call up on a screen. What doesn't exist everywhere is a copy that can say who traced it, where, and under what serial number.
The España is a dreadnought battleship built for the Spanish Navy by SECN in Ferrol, Spain — launched on 5 February 1912 and commissioned on 23 October 1913, lead ship of the España class. Four Parsons steam turbines fed by 12 Yarrow boilers produced 15,500 shp, giving a top speed of 19.5 knots. She carried eight 305 mm guns as main armament, backed by twenty 102 mm secondary guns, four 47 mm 3-pounders, and two Maxim machine guns, with a crew of 854. Displacement ranged from 15,700 t standard to 16,450 t full load, on a hull 140 m (459.3 ft) long, 24 m (78.7 ft) at the beam, drawing 7.80 m (25.6 ft).
