A technical plan of the Pluton, drawn in pen, line by line, on 250 g/m² paper, 11 x 17 in (27.9 x 43.2 cm). A physical nib presses into the paper and lays down real ink, stroke after stroke.
The Pluton exists as a photo and a spec sheet, everywhere — a drawing anyone can call up on a screen. What doesn't exist everywhere is a copy that can say who traced it, where, and under what serial number.
The Pluton is a fast minelaying cruiser built for the French Navy at the Arsenal de Lorient — launched in 1929 and commissioned on 25 January 1932. Two geared steam turbines fed by du Temple boilers produced 57,000 shp, giving a top speed of 30 knots (56 km/h) and a range of 4,510 nautical miles at 14 knots. Designed to carry 220 to 270 mines, she was also armed with four 138.6 mm main guns and ten 37 mm anti-aircraft guns. Displacement ranged from 5,300 t standard to 6,214 t full load, on a hull 152.5 m (500.3 ft) long, 15.5 m (50.9 ft) at the beam, drawing 5.2 m (17.1 ft). Pluton's career was short: on 13 September 1939, while loading mines at Casablanca at the outbreak of the Second World War, she was destroyed by an accidental explosion.
