The USS Nevada introduced the 'all or nothing' armor scheme that would define American battleship design for decades, concentrating protection over the magazines and engines rather than spreading it thin. On December 7, 1941, it was the only battleship to get underway during the attack on Pearl Harbor, taking six bomb hits and a torpedo before being deliberately beached to avoid sinking in the channel. Repaired and returned to service, it went on to serve as a flagship at the Normandy landings before surviving two atomic blasts at Bikini Atoll in 1946 — only to be sunk by a training torpedo two years later.
