Entropia is a grid that stopped obeying. From across the room: a hundred modules in neat rows and columns. Up close: not one square is straight, not one is the same size, not one turns the same way as its neighbour. The order holds at a distance and comes apart as you approach. The form didn't start from a photograph or a template: a set of rules decided, once, how far each module would drift from the grid. I chose the seed, set how far the disorder could go, then let the robot lay down ink — black, blue, red, one colour after the other. Three passes means two alignments to get right. The paper goes back on the bed twice, and each remount comes down to a few tenths of a millimetre. On a piece built from a hundred nested contours, that drift has nowhere to hide. Ten copies will come off this seed. Not one more. And no two will match: the registration between the three layers shifts a little on every mount. That's where the machine stops being a copying machine. On the back: a serial number and the date, laid down in UV ink in the same pass as the drawing. When the tenth one goes, the release is retired. A retired release doesn't come back.
