Gravity starts with emptiness. At the top of the sheet, a few isolated strokes, far apart. Lower down they close in. Lower still they touch, cross, overlap, until no black is left between them. Nothing moves in this image, and yet everything in it is falling. The form didn't start from a photograph or a template: a set of rules decided, once, how fast the density would build toward the bottom. I chose the seed, set the slope of the accumulation, then let the robot lay white ink onto black paper, stroke after stroke. Thousands of segments, every one different, every one placed individually. It's the kind of piece where the machine works for hours and a person has nothing to do but watch: if the pen starts drying out near the bottom of the sheet, where the ink piles up thickest, the piece is lost. Ten copies will come off this seed. Not one more. And no two will match: white never covers black exactly the same way twice. That's where the machine stops being a copying machine. On the back: a serial number and the date, laid down in UV ink in the same pass as the drawing. When the tenth one goes, the release is retired. A retired release doesn't come back.
