A technical plan of the Hummer H2, drawn line by line in pen on 250gsm paper, at 11 x 17 in (27.9 x 43.2 cm). A physical tip presses into the paper and lays down real ink. On the back, a serial number and date, plotted in UV ink in the same pass as the drawing.

The H2's silhouette exists in file form everywhere. What doesn't exist everywhere is a single copy you can point to and say who drew it, where, on what day, under what number.

The Hummer H2 was General Motors' attempt to bring the military-adjacent Hummer brand to civilian buyers, built by AM General on a modified pickup-truck platform and loaded with the leather, heated seats, and Bose sound system the original H1 never offered. Sales peaked at 34,529 units in 2003 before tapering off, with 153,026 sold in total across its 2002-2009 production run. Because its gross vehicle weight exempted it from fuel economy testing, GM never published an official rating — real-world figures from independent reviewers landed around 9 to 11 mpg.

Each piece is physically plotted by the studio's precision robot in Québec City, using Stabilo® Fineliners and Sakura® Gelly Roll inks on 250 gsm (120 lb) stock — stroke by stroke, never printed. A physical tip presses into the paper and lays down real ink. The result is a tactile, hand-plotted finish — never printed.

What the robot does, what a person does

The robot

  • ◆runs the file
  • ◆traces the line
  • ◆lays down ink
  • ◆repeats without tiring

A person

  • ◆picks the vehicle
  • ◆designs the linework
  • ◆decides which lines disappear

Hidden signature

The CodeInk signature glowing under UV light on the back of a plotted piece

Real footage — an early production piece, shown under blacklight.

A signature only UV light reveals

On the back of every piece, in the same pass as the drawing, we plot a signature invisible under normal light — codeink.art, the piece's name and serial number, the year, and Québec. Shine a blacklight on it and it glows.

“A vehicle too heavy to need an official fuel economy rating is a strange kind of milestone — proof that its own size was the point, not an inconvenience. There's a certain discipline in tracing every panel of something that never once tried to be modest.”

— Carlos, CodeInk.art, Québec

Open production, no duplicates

Each plot is made after you order, one at a time. The pen wears slightly with every hour of use, ink density shifts, and no two lines close at exactly the same point — nothing is corrected or hidden.

PERFECTLY imperfect.

It is physically drawn. A precision plotting robot holds a real pen and draws every single line on paper — exactly like a human would, but with mechanical consistency. No inkjet. No toner. No digital print.
