A technical plan of the Manitowoc 31000, drawn in pen, line by line, on 250 g/m² paper, 11 x 17 in (27.9 x 43.2 cm). A physical nib presses into the paper and lays down real ink, stroke after stroke.

The 31000 exists as a spec sheet and a render, everywhere — a drawing anyone can call up on a screen. What doesn't exist everywhere is a copy that can say who traced it, where, and under what serial number.

The Manitowoc 31000 is a lattice-boom crawler crane built for heavy industrial lifting — wind-turbine components, refinery vessels, and other loads too large for a mobile crane. Its main boom extends to 110 m (361 ft), with an optional luffing jib reaching 114 m (374 ft) or a fixed jib to 42 m (137 ft 10 in), giving a maximum lifting capacity of 2,300 t (2,535 USt) on the main boom and a maximum load moment of 35,800 mton-m (258,940 ft-kips). Its signature feature is the patented Variable Position Counterweight (VPC, US Patent 7,546,928) — the only self-supporting counterweight system in its class. Instead of resting on the ground, the counterweight is suspended above it and repositions automatically as load increases, keeping the crane's moment balanced without the site preparation a ground-supported tray would need. Power comes from two 447 kW (600 hp) Cummins QSX15 diesel engines, one per independent power plant, driving four trunnion-mounted crawlers through hydraulic motors. Swing tops out at 0.50 rpm, travel at 0.60 km/h (0.37 mph) — deliberately slow, built for precision under enormous load rather than speed.

  • ◆110 m maximum main boom
  • ◆Two 447 kW Cummins engines
  • ◆Patented Variable Position Counterweight system

Each piece is physically plotted by the studio's precision robot in Québec City, using Stabilo® Fineliners and Sakura® Gelly Roll inks on 250 gsm (120 lb) stock — stroke by stroke, never printed. A physical tip presses into the paper and lays down real ink. The result is a tactile, hand-plotted finish — never printed.

What the robot does. What a person decides.

The robot

  • ◆Runs the file
  • ◆Draws the boom, the lattice, the crawlers
  • ◆Lays down ink, line by line
  • ◆Repeats without tiring

A person

  • ◆Chooses the crane and the view
  • ◆Designs which lines survive from thousands
  • ◆Sets pen pressure, speed, and height
  • ◆Watches the plot from start to finish
  • ◆Signs, numbers, and packs the piece

Drawn by a robot. Designed by a person.

Hidden signature

Real footage — an early production piece, shown under blacklight.

A signature only UV light reveals

On the back of every piece, in the same pass as the drawing, we plot a signature invisible under normal light — codeink.art, the piece's name and serial number, the year, and Québec. Shine a blacklight on it and it glows.

“A crane like this is mostly steel and math — hydraulics, load moments, patents. Reducing it to a few thousand strokes of ink is its own kind of engineering.”

— Carlos, CodeInk.art, Québec

Open production, no duplicates

This piece is plotted after you order it — the pen wears down over the hours it takes to draw, so ink density varies slightly and no two lines close exactly the same way. Nothing is corrected or hidden.

There's no cap on how many are made, but each one is drawn individually, signed, and numbered — never a batch, never printed.
