The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL — nicknamed "Gullwing" for its distinctive upward-hinged doors — is a sports car built by Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, West Germany, from 1954 to 1957. Only 1,400 coupés were made, and it was the first production car to use mechanical direct fuel injection, adapted from Mercedes' wartime aircraft engines. Its 3.0 L (2,996 cc) inline-six produces 179 kW (240 hp) at 6,100 rpm, through a 4-speed manual gearbox — 0–100 km/h in 9.3 seconds and a top speed up to 260 km/h (162 mph) depending on axle ratio, making it the fastest production car of its era. Curb weight is 1,295 kg (2,855 lb). It measures 4.52 m (178 in) long, 1.79 m (70.5 in) wide, and 1.30 m (51.2 in) tall.
