The Beetle exists as a file, everywhere — a drawing anyone can call up on a screen. What doesn't exist everywhere is a copy that can say who drew it, where, and under what serial number.
The Volkswagen Type 1 began as a government-directed project in 1930s Germany: an affordable car for ordinary families, developed under engineer Ferdinand Porsche's direction and first produced in 1938 as the KdF-Wagen. Full civilian production only began after the Second World War, when the model — nicknamed "Beetle" for its rounded shape — became one of the most recognizable cars ever built. Its layout was unusual from the start: an air-cooled flat-four engine mounted behind the rear axle, driving the rear wheels, with no radiator. That original 985cc engine produced 23.5 horsepower and a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph) — modest numbers, built for reliability and low cost rather than speed. Production continued for 65 years across multiple countries, outlasting the era that first built it as much as any single model can. When the last Beetle rolled off the line in Puebla, Mexico, in 2003, more than 21.5 million had been built.

Each piece is physically plotted by the studio's precision robot in Québec City, using Stabilo® Fineliners and Sakura® Gelly Roll inks on 250 gsm (120 lb) stock — stroke by stroke, never printed. A physical tip presses into the paper and lays down real ink. The result is a tactile, hand-plotted finish — never printed.
